Doubletree Access, Atlantic Beach: the small swell that was building yesterday has been steam-rolled. There is just barely a trace of surf.
The Doubletree has been through several iterations of pier-hood, each one smaller and more compact, leading up to the stubborn, stubby pier that’s still standing today. There’s still a wave to be sniffed out here and there is a parking lot and public access. In its heyday, there were frequent confrontations between surfers and fishermen (or surfers and surfers or fishermen and fishermen). If you were within throwing distance of the pier, chances were, someone would throw something at you (usually but not always, lead). It’s mellower now and there are some waves to be had near the pier and nearby.
